The Second "Micro- Curatorial Project" Selected Proposals Announced

Presented by Frank F. Yang Art and Education Foundation, The Second "Micro-Curatorial" Project has received 39 proposals from China, U.S., U.K.,Germany, France, Australia, South Korea and Hungary etc. 15 countries in total since the official open call announced.

Different from the First Micro-Curatorial Project, this time the project is open to applicants at all age, professional, practicing in all artistic mediums, regions and concepts. Among 39 proposals, the professional background of applicants varies from artists, curators and art critics to producers , university professors, interior designers and poets, practitioners and researchers in other cultural fields across the world. All the proposals are based on Spare Space ( The art space of Frank F. Yang and Education Foundation in Shanghai ) and its immediate community, exploring the unique connotation of the space with their own curatorial perspectives.

Based on the principle of openness and diversity, The jury for this edition of Micro-Curatorial Project, chaired by Karen Smith takes creativity, curatorial concept and feasibility into consideration, in hoping to discover an site-specific exhibition project that best resonates with local historical and cultural context of Spare Space. As of now, there are 13 groups of applicants who have entered the final round of selection. They are (listed in alphabetical order): Chen Li ( Independent Curator, Researcher; China), Dori Deng ( Artist, Curator; U.K.), Henrietta Y. Xie ( Independent Curator, Writer; Hungary), Karma Ltd. Extended ( Curatorial Collaboration; Germany), Lina Louisa Kraemer ( Independent Curator, Researcher; Germany), Lu Zhengyuan ( Artist; China), O. Rynell Cash ( Independent Curator; Belgium), Ruixuan Li & Mengni Zhang ( Independent Curator & designer; China), Wang Ziyun ( Independent Curator, Researcher; China), Wu Jianru ( Independent Curator, Writer, Art History Researcher; China) , Yang Jian& Pu Yingwei ( Curator, Art Critic & Artist; China), Zhang Yingying ( Independent Curator, Writer, Art Observer, Chief Editor; China) and Zoe De Luca ( Curator, Editor; Italy).

Karen Smith says compared to the First Micro-Curatorial Project, the proposals received this year have been taken to a higher level. All the ideas are interesting and distinctive. Started from applicants'advantageous researches on different subjects and area of contemporary art, creative exhibition proposals have been developed . Each curatorial source as well as the artists selected have their own merits. In the meantime, Karen Smith emphasized the challenge to the applicants this year, “this is a site-specific project of Spare Space in Shanghai. Though floorplans have been provided, some applicants have conceived some grand, idealistic projects due to unfamiliarity of the space, which is inevitable at the beginning of the conception. But I believe this will be solved in the future by coordinating closely with the curatorial team.”

The finalist and his/her proposal will be announced in the middle of August. Apart from the $8,000 (50,000CNY) curatorial fee given to the winner, the proposal will be executed with the full support of the foundation and Blue Ocean Capital Group, and the exhibition will be presented subsequently at the Spare Space in Shanghai.
