Press Release: Micro Curatorial Project

Micro Curatorial Project_Press release

Presented by Frank F.Yang Art and Education Foundation, Micro Curatorial Project aims at reflecting diversity in the development of contemporary art through an open call for small scale exhibition proposals, a project that resonates with the various “micro” platforms on the internet and its allegorical significance of being an information hub. Meanwhile, Micro Curatorial Project hopes to provide an opportunity to the new and emerging curators in executing their unique concepts and a platform for artists and art critics to exhibit their works and spark new ideas.

The jury for this edition of Micro Curatorial Project, chaired by Karen Smith, art critic and curator, executive director of the Xi’an OCT Art Terminal, include art director of the Shenzhen OCT Art Terminal, Venus Lau; art critic and independent curator, Bao Dong; lecturer of the Art Institute of The Huanan Normal University, Duan Jianyu and collector and founder of the Frank F. Yang Art and Education Foundation, Frank Yang.

The evaluation on the proposals takes creativity, curatorial concept, originality, feasibility, relevance to the local and international contexts into consideration, in hoping to discover an exhibition project that is open-minded, independent and experimental in spirit. We have received more than 30 proposals from the U.S., U.K., Russia, Italy, Poland and China, out of which, 18 are complete proposals. As of now, the project has entered its final phase. The curators who have entered the final round of selection are (listed in alphabetical order), Bian Ka (Mainland China), Dasha Birukova (Russia), Franz Thalmair (Austria), Goedele Bartholomeeusen (Italy), Hanna Laura Kaljo (U.K.), Micol Di Veroli (Italy), Sagi Refael (U.S.), Yip Kai Chun (Hong Kong) and Zheng Nianti (Mainland China).

Karen Smith, the chairperson of the jury, says: “The first curatorial call for the Frank  F.Yang Foundation has drawn submission from a diverse group of individual curators located in many different part of the world. In part this reflects the level of China’s current engagement with the international art world but it also reveals the potential for this type of project to further that engagement. It is a credit to the foundation that within its first year it has gained a profile deserving of attention of many aspiring curators. I am confident the jury will select a project worthy of the effort that has gone into creating both the foundation and the curatorial project so far.”

The finalist and his/her proposal will be announced at the end of July. The foundation will provide its full support in the execution of this proposal, and the exhibition will be presented subsequently at the You space (Nanhai E-Cool) in the coming fall.
